From the Founder
What started as a personal ski wardrobe eventually became Australia's largest luxury skiwear rental collection. Along the way, I've learnt that choosing the right outfit isn't just about staying warm, it's about feeling confident, comfortable and completely yourself on the mountain. This guide brings together everything I've learnt after years of skiing and helping hundreds of women prepare for their own winter adventures.
My Story
How a Personal Ski Wardrobe Became 2nd Lane
When I first started skiing, I had no idea how much there was to learn—not only about the sport itself, but about what to wear. Like many first-time skiers, I thought a warm jacket would be enough. It didn't take long to realise that technical clothing, thoughtful layering and the right fit can completely change your experience on the mountain.
Over the years, skiing became one of my favourite ways to travel. Every trip added another piece to my wardrobe, and before long friends were borrowing my outfits for their own holidays. What started as a personal collection slowly grew into something much bigger.
One day, my husband looked at my wardrobe and simply said, "This could be a business." He was right. Today, that collection has evolved into Australia's largest luxury skiwear rental wardrobe, helping women travel lighter while wearing some of the world's most beautiful technical skiwear.
What I've Learnt
The Right Outfit Can Transform Your Ski Holiday
One of the questions I'm asked most often is whether it's better to wear a one-piece ski suit or a traditional jacket and pants. The truth is, there isn't a right or wrong answer—it's all about how you like to ski and how you want to feel on the mountain.
Personally, I love both. A beautifully tailored ski suit creates an elegant, streamlined silhouette that feels effortlessly put together, while a jacket and pants offer incredible versatility. They're ideal if you like mixing colours, adjusting your layers throughout the day or creating different looks across your trip.
Whatever you choose, my advice is always the same: invest in technical pieces that genuinely perform. The most stylish outfit won't feel luxurious if you're cold, wet or constantly adjusting your clothing throughout the day.
I always recommend following the three-layer system. Start with a moisture-wicking thermal base layer to keep sweat away from your skin, add an insulating mid-layer—such as fleece or lightweight down—for warmth, and finish with a waterproof, breathable outer layer. This allows you to adapt to changing mountain conditions while staying comfortable from your first chairlift to your last run.
Finally, don't underestimate the accessories. A properly fitted helmet, high-quality goggles, waterproof gloves, technical ski socks and comfortable snow boots are just as important as your jacket or ski suit. They're the details that keep you warm, protected and comfortable all day—and they're often what separates a good ski day from a great one.
"Every ski trip has its own story. If I can help another woman arrive feeling confident, comfortable and beautifully dressed, then I've done exactly what I created 2nd Lane to do."Mariane Franca, Founder of 2nd Lane
Complete the Look
The Small Details Make the Biggest Difference
While jackets and ski suits often receive the most attention, it's your accessories that can make the biggest difference to your comfort on the mountain.
Invest in a quality helmet, waterproof gloves or mittens, technical ski socks and high-performance goggles to protect your eyes from wind, snow and the intense alpine UV experienced throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Comfortable waterproof snow boots are equally important for walking through alpine villages such as Thredbo, Perisher, Mt Buller and Queenstown, allowing you to transition effortlessly from the slopes to lunch, shopping or après-ski.
Plan Smarter
Should You Rent or Buy Ski Clothing?
For many Australians and New Zealanders, skiing is a once or twice-a-year holiday rather than a weekly hobby. Investing in premium technical skiwear can easily cost several thousand dollars, yet those garments may only be worn for a few days each season.
Renting allows you to enjoy beautifully maintained luxury skiwear without the upfront investment. It also gives you the freedom to choose different styles for every trip, travel with less luggage and wear the latest collections from the world's leading ski brands.
Whether you're spending a weekend in Perisher or heading to Queenstown for a week on the slopes, renting premium skiwear is a practical, sustainable and stylish way to experience luxury without compromise.
